DOE INFUSE award for optical cavity research with Blue Laser Fusion
September 19, 2024
Our group has been awarded a DOE INFUSE project in collaboration with Blue Laser Fusion, a startup founded by Nobel laureate Shuji Nakamura. The project applies optical enhancement cavity technology — originally developed for LIGO gravitational-wave detectors — to high-repetition-rate pulsed laser systems for inertial fusion energy.
Blue Laser Fusion is developing a laser-driven fusion system using coherent beam-combined fiber lasers injected into high-finesse cavities, with demonstrated energy enhancement factors approaching 60,000. Our role is to bring LIGO’s cavity control and stabilization expertise to this new application.
